The verification phase is the second stage in a two-phase funded evaluation designed to confirm that the performance shown in the evaluation phase reflects a repeatable trading approach rather than a single fortunate session. It uses a lower profit target and the same or similar risk limits as Phase 1.
Passing the verification phase typically advances a trader directly to a funded account and triggers the return of the evaluation fee in programs that offer a fee refund on first payout.
How verification phase conditions differ from evaluation phase
The profit target in a verification phase is usually set lower than Phase 1 — commonly 5% versus 8% for Phase 1 on the same account size. Risk limits (daily loss and maximum drawdown) are typically identical. The reduced target reflects the phase’s purpose: it is a consistency check, not a second performance hurdle.
The same hard limits apply with equal force. A drawdown breach in the verification phase ends the process in the same way as Phase 1 — the entire evaluation must be restarted. The lower target does not make Phase 2 easier from a risk-management perspective; it makes it shorter in expectation, not safer.
Common errors in the verification phase
- Complacency: Traders sometimes approach Phase 2 with reduced focus because the target is lower, then breach a limit through inattention.
- Overtrading to finish quickly: Taking larger positions to hit the target faster compresses the margin between trading results and the hard limits.
- Ignoring minimum trading days: Where a minimum trading days requirement applies, it binds in Phase 2 as well — the target being lower does not remove the day count requirement.
Rules locked at Phase 1 start
In programs with versioned rules, the ruleset that governs a two-phase evaluation — including Phase 2 conditions — is locked at the point of Phase 1 purchase. A rule change introduced between Phase 1 and Phase 2 should not apply to an active evaluation that started before the change. Verify this explicitly in the program rules before purchasing.
