In funded trader programs, a challenge is the colloquial term for a trader evaluation — the paid assessment a trader completes to qualify for a funded account. The term is used interchangeably with “evaluation”, “assessment”, and “program” across the industry, though some operators use it specifically to refer to their product tier names.
The word carries an implicit framing: the assessment is designed to be genuinely difficult to pass. Industry pass rates across the category sit at roughly 10–15%, which means the majority of challenge attempts do not result in a funded account.
What a challenge consists of
A standard challenge involves one or two phases of simulated trading under a defined rule set. In each phase, the trader must:
- Hit a profit target within the phase.
- Never breach the daily loss limit on any single day.
- Never breach the maximum drawdown at any point.
- Meet any additional conditions — minimum trading days, consistency rule, prohibited trading practice restrictions — as defined in the program rules.
All conditions must be met simultaneously. Hitting the profit target while breaching a loss limit is not a pass. The challenge tests whether a trader can be profitable within a defined risk framework — not whether they can be profitable in isolation.
Challenge structures
The two most common structures are the two-phase evaluation and the one-step evaluation. Two-phase challenges require passing two sequential phases with different profit targets; one-step challenges require a single phase with a typically higher target. The choice of structure affects the time to funded status, the fee, and the difficulty profile.
Why challenges have the pass rates they do
The primary failure mode is not unprofitability — it is breaching a risk limit. Industry post-mortems consistently show that most failed challenges end on a daily loss limit breach or a drawdown floor breach, often on a single adverse session, rather than on sustained underperformance. The challenge is as much a risk-management test as a trading performance test — and the two are equally weighted by the rules.
