Copy Trading

Copy trading is a practice in which a trader automatically replicates the positions of another trader in real time — when the lead trader opens, modifies, or closes a position, the same action is mirrored proportionally on the follower’s account. In funded evaluations, whether copy trading is permitted, and under what conditions, is a program rule that must be confirmed before use.

Copy trading in evaluation programs: the key distinction

Programs that restrict copy trading are primarily concerned with two scenarios:

  • Cross-account copying: A trader who passes an evaluation by copying their own positions from one account to another — or uses one account as a signal source to pass multiple evaluation accounts simultaneously. This is functionally equivalent to running the same strategy across many accounts at once, which removes the individual assessment element of the evaluation.
  • Shared signal services: Multiple traders using the same commercial copy trading signal to pass evaluations creates correlated position-taking at scale — similar to the shared EA problem — which concentrates risk for the program operator.

Copying your own live trading strategy from a personal account onto an evaluation account — where you are the signal source — is a different scenario and is permitted by most programs that otherwise restrict third-party copy services.

Copy trading and the consistency rule

Programs with a consistency rule impose an indirect constraint on copy trading even where it is technically permitted: if a copied signal produces a single outsized winning day that exceeds the consistency cap, the evaluation may not pass regardless of the overall profit. The consistency rule applies to the account result, not to the source of the trades.

What to confirm in program rules

  • Whether any form of copy trading or signal following is permitted.
  • Whether copying from your own personal account is treated differently from third-party signals.
  • Whether using a copy trading platform (ZuluTrade, Myfxbook Autotrade, etc.) is permitted even if the signal source is your own account.
  • Whether running the same strategy across multiple evaluation accounts simultaneously is restricted.
